Kirkistown, situated near the fishing village of Portavogie on the picturesque Ards Peninsula in Co Down has been home to the 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland since 1953. Back in 1986, the North of England based Formula E series paid a visit to the former wartime airfield, and received some spectacular hospitality from the organisers and local competitors. The feature race was a visitors vs. the locals FF1600 race which was keenly contested and generated a lot of interest in Northern Ireland, even the Mayor of Belfast was in attendance.
The televised race was won by a young local hotshoe, Michael Woodside in a Mondial, from Vivian (brother of Derek) Daly. Another local boy, failed to finish after leading from the start, none other than ex-Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine.
